Why count birds?

Participating on Christmas Bird Counts appeals to different people for different reasons.

Some of those reasons are:

  • Enjoying the adventure of searching for as many species of birds as possible within the allotted time. Some have described it as being like a scavenger hunt.
  • The camaraderie of being with other birders and sharing the experience.
  • Contributing effort toward the monitoring of bird population trends over time.
  • Having a reason to get out of the house on a winter day.
  • Seeing the countryside and enjoying the scenery.
  • The fascination and pleasure of seeing birds and studying nature.
